Double-Sided Dematting Rake

A double-sided rake: one side opens mats, the other thins the undercoat. It is the tool you reach for when a slicker brush skates over the top and does nothing.

Two sides, two jobs

• Wide side with hooked blades — slices through loose mats without yanking the skin.
• Narrow side — thins a thick undercoat so it stops trapping heat and matting again.

How to use it

Work in short strokes with the coat, not against it. Hold the mat at the base with your free hand so the pull lands on the hair, not the skin. Stop if the skin reddens — and never use it on a coat that is completely matted to the skin; that needs clippers, not a rake.
